When the Safeway of Pacific Grove was renovated, a new Starbucks counter was added. Carmel’s architect Ray Parks’ goal was to update not just the indoors, but also the outdoors with a fresh urban look.

Warm natural stone pillars and walls form a covered portico with tables at the entrance creating an inviting transition from outdoors into the building. Pacific Grove’s mild seaside climate and need for water conservation presented to opportunity to EPD to compliment the architecture and provide curb appeal to the large parking lot with colorful foliage of drought tolerant grasses, native poppies for a Spring show and the year around interest of textures and architectural forms of succulents.
